HIDDEN GEMS: THE ELUOSI

Come and discover the ‘inbetween’ Russian-Chinese community of Sydney on a night of music, food and film. ''...As I listen to the songs of the Eluosi people, [I came] to understand that the art of singing is one of the most crucial links which have connected the older generations of the Eluosi people to their homeland and language of their ancestors."

The Eluosi people as a unique ethnic group emerged due to the mass voluntary or forced migration  of the Russian settlers  outside of their historical motherland, but mainly as a result of inter-ethnic marriages between Russian women and Chinese migrant workers in the first half of the 20th centuary. They have been residing as an ethnic minority in China, as well as in Australia since the early 1980s. In regards to most of the Australian Eluosi people, to them, Russia is an imaginary motherland, as they were born outside of Russia or the Soviet Union, with only few exceptions of the elder generation born in the 1920-1930 in the USSR.
